TheProblem:

Wearedevelopingnewtechniquesfortreatinginputtextureimagesasprobabilitydensityestimatorsfromwhichwecansamplenewtextures,withsimilarappearanceandstructuralproperties.

Motivation:

Thegoaloftexturesynthesisistogenerateanewimagefromanexampletexture,suchthatthenewimageissufficientlydifferentfromtheoriginalyetstillappearsasthoughitwasgeneratedbythesameunderlyingstochasticprocess.Ifsuccessful,thenewimagewilldifferfromtheoriginal,yethaveperceptuallyidenticaltexturecharacteristics.

PreviousWork:

Recentlyseveralattemptsatdevelopingsuchtechniqueshavebeensuccessfulinlimiteddomains.MostnotablyHeegerandBergen[1],whoiterativelyresamplerandomnoisetocoerceitintohavingparticularmultiresolutionorientedenergyhistograms.

Approach:

Theapproachpresentedhereusestheresultspsychophysicalmodelstoprovideconstraintsonastatisticalsamplingprocedure.Inatwo-phaseprocess,theinputtextureisfirstanalyzedbymeasuringthejointoccurrence,acrossmultipleresolutions,ofseveralofthefeaturesusedinpsychophysicalmodels.Inthesecondphase,anewtextureissynthesizedbysamplingsuccessivespatialfrequencybandsfromtheinputtexture,conditionedonthesimilarjointoccurrenceoffeaturesatalllowerspatialfrequencies.Byrearrangingtexturalcomponentsatlocationsandresolutionswherethediscriminabilityisbelowthreshold,newtexturesamplesaregeneratedwhichhavesimilarvisualcharacteristics.SeveralresultsofthismethodareshowninFigure1.

Difficulty:

Thegoaloftexturesynthesisistogenerateatexturewhichisbothrandomandperceptuallyidenticaltotheoriginaltexture.Todothisthesynthesizedtexturemustappeartohavebeengeneratedbythesameunderlyingphysicalprocessastheoriginal.However,thisprocessisunknownandthesuccessofsynthesisdependsuponitsabilitytodiscoverit.

Impact:

Fromthisresearchnewmodelsofprobabilistictexturegenerationhavedeveloped.Thesesuggestunderlyingimagerepresentationswhichcanbeusedincomputervisionandimagedatabasetechnology.

Futurework:

Newtexturediscriminationtechniques,whichisalargecomponentofgeneralimagerecognition,canbedevelopedasaresultofthisresearch.
