二、阅读判断
1、Suppose you make your parents so happy, they decide to have another baby just like you. It might be flattering (讨人喜欢的), but how would you feel about having a little brother or sister who is also your twin?
A laboratory experiment conducted last fall suggests it may someday be possible. For the first time ever, scientists made exact copies, or clones, of a human embryo.
Although the embryos grew for only six days, cloned embryos could theoretically be implanted in a woman’s womb (子宫) and develop into normal babies. Or they could be frozen and implanted years later.
The scientists developed their cloning technique to make it easier for childless couples to have babies by in vitro (在体外的) fertilization. In this procedure, sperm (精子) from the man fertilizes an egg from the woman in a laboratory dish.
In most case, doctors must try implanting several embryos before one stays in the womb. Cloned embryos would give them many more embryos to implant.
But the technique could also be used for other purposes. Parents might freeze embryos cloned from their children so that they could be replaced if any of them died. The clones would also be ideal donors if the children needed organ transplants.
Another possibility: Childless couples could go to a bank of frozen embryos and choose a child just like one who’s already living. Some people are concerned that these couples might pick only beautiful, successful children.
The ethical dilemmas of cloning have not yet been discussed fully because the public assumed it was a long way off. Many people are calling for controls on cloning immediately before the practice is abused. What do you think?

三、概括大意与完成句子
1、1.The energy crisis, which is being felt around the world, has dramatized how the reckless despoiling of the earth’s resources has brought the whole world to brink of disaster. The overdevelopment of motor transport, with its spiral of more cars, more highway, more pollution, more suburbs, more commuting, has contributed to the
near-destruction of our cities, the disintegration of the family, and the pollution not only of local air, but also of the earth’s atmosphere. The catastrophe has arrived in the form of the energy crunch.
2.Our present situation is unlike war, revolution or depression. It is also unlike the great natural catastrophes of the past. Worldwide resources exploitation and energy use have brought us to a state where long-range planning is crucial. What we need is not a
continuation of our present perilous state, which endangers the future of our country., our children and our earth, but a movement forward to a new norm in order to work rapidly and effectively on planetary problems.
3.This country has been reeling under the continuing exposures of loss of moral integrity and the revelation that lawbreaking has reached into the highest places in the land. There is a strong demand for moral reinvigoration and for some commitment that is vast enough and yet personal enough to enlist the loyalty of all. In the past it has been only in a war in defense of their own country and their own ideals that any people have been able to invoke a total commitment.
4.This is the first time that we have been asked to defend ourselves and what we hold dear in cooperation with all the other inhabitants of this planet, who share with us the same endangered air and the same endangered oceans. There is a common need to reassess our present course, to change that course and to devise new methods through
which the world can survive. This is a priceless opportunity.
5.To grasp it, we need a widespread understanding of nature of the crisis confronting us --- and the world --- a crisis that is no passing inconvenience, no by-product of the ambitions of the oil-producing countries, no figment of environmentalists’ fears, no byproduct of any present system of government. What we face is the outcome of the
invention of the last four hundred years. What we need is a transformed lifestyle. This new life style can flow directly from science and technology, but its acceptance depends on an overriding commitment to a higher quality of life for the world’s children and future generation.

四、阅读理解 1、Leisure
The problem of leisure is new. Until very recent times people worked each day to the limit of their strength. Of course there were always a privileged few who had leisure; but most men had to work 12, 14, or even 16 hours a day, six days a week. As late as 1840 the average factory worker labored 72 hours a week. “Sunup to sundown” was the farmer’s day, or as another phrase puts it, “from can to can’t.”
Today, working less than a 40-hour week, people enjoy more leisure time. Hence, the wise use of leisure time has become an important problem for everyone, young or old. It is a particularly difficult problem for the sick, the aged, and those who have retired from earning a living. Those people have so much leisure that it is hard for them to find interesting and worthwhile ways to use it.
However short the work week becomes, work is still the most important part of life. We do not work to get leisure and the pleasures leisure brings us; rather, we use leisure wisely so that work itself can become awarding and enjoyable. The feeling of success at doing
one’ daily work -whether it is a job, maintaining a home, going to school - spends largely on coming to it each day with fresh energy and active interest. Leisure and recreation(消遗)go together, though they are not necessarily the same thing. “Recreation” has an obvious meaning. It is the kind of leisure activity that brings
“re-creation” of strength and spirit. When one speaks of making good use of leisure, he means choosing recreational activities which contribute to health, growth, and spirit. <1>、The phrase “from can to can’t” in paragraph 1 means ______. A.from beginning to end B.from birth to death C.from morning to night D.from time to time
<2>、How to spend leisure time wisely is not a particularly difficult problem for people ______.
A.who are very busy everyday B.who are sick in bed
C.who are aged and in good health D.who have retired from work
<3>、How does the author look at work and leisure? A.We work hard so that we can enjoy more leisure.
B.We enjoy leisure so that we can come back to work with fresh energy. C.Leisure can bring us a lot of pleasures that work cannot.
D.The success of work has little to do with how we spend our leisure time.
<4>、What is the relationship between leisure and recreation, according to the author? A.Leisure and recreation are closely related. B.Leisure and recreation are identical.
C.Recreation covers all kinds of leisure activities. D.Recreation does not belong to any leisure activity.
<5>、From the passage we know that ______.
A.leisure has been an old problem since ancient times
B.leisure cannot be replaced as the most important part of life
C.our success in work is mostly determined by whether we use leisure wisely D.good recreational activities contribute greatly to health, growth and spirit
2、Excessive Demands on Young People
Being able to multitask is hailed by most people as a welcome skill, but not according to a recent study which claims that young people between the ages of eight and eighteen of the so-called Generation M are spending a considerable amount of their time in fruitless efforts as they multitask. It argues that, in fact, these young people are frittering away as much as half of their time again as they would if they performed the very same tasks one after the other.
Some young people are juggling an ever larger number of electronic devices as they study. At the same time that they are working, young adults are also surfing on the Internet, or sending out emails to their friends, and/or answering the telephone and listening to music on their iPods or on another computer. As some new device comes along, it too is added to the list rather than replacing one of the existing devices. Other research has indicated that this multitasking is even affecting the way families themselves function as young people are too wrapped up(注意力完全集中于)in their own isolated worlds to interact with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house nor can they eat at the family table. All this electronic wizardry is supposedly also seriously affecting young people's
performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their perception of the impact of modern gadgets on their performance of tasks, the overwhelming majority of young people gave a favourable response.
The response from the academic and business worlds was not quite as positive. The former feel that multitasking with electronic gadgets by children affects later development of study skills, resulting in a decline in the quality of writing, for example, because of the lack of concentration on task completion. They feel that many undergraduates now
urgently need remedial help with study skills. Similarly, employers feel that young people entering the workforce need to be taught all over again, as they have become deskilled. While all this may be true, it must be borne in mind that more and more is expected of young people nowadays; in fact, too much. Praise rather than criticism is due in respect of the way today's youth are able to cope despite what the older generation throw at them. <1>、According to a recent study, what is probably true about the multitasking Generation M?
A.They are highly commended for being so effective and efficient.
B.They waste more time than they should save, contrary to common assumptions. C.They should prioritize and focus on the most important tasks on hand.
D.They need to improve their organizational skills so as to complete all their tasks. <2>、With the advent of new gadgets, what will happen to Generation M's present e-devices?
A.They make way for the latest and greatest and are retired by the young people. B.They are put away temporarily but stay in rotation for their owners to choose from. C.They become part of the ever increasing collection of novelties.
D.They are either sold or traded so that their owners can update their toys and hobbies. <3>、How will multitasking affect Generation M adversely? A.It makes them feel lonely and pitiful.
B.It makes them aloof and elusive to family and friends. C.It makes them selfish and possessive. D.It makes them impolite and ungrateful.
<4>、What is the biggest problem for multitasking undergraduates in universities? A.They should adjust their academic attitudes seriously.
B.They should seek psychological professionals for assistance.
C.They should take some crash courses to catch up with their classmates. D.They should try harder to focus on one task before moving on to the next. <5>、In dealing with today's youth, what approach should parents take? A.Be supportive and understanding.
B.Be realistic and lower their expectations.
C.Be encouraging and let their children stick to their old habits. D.Be patient and hope everything will work out just fine eventually.
3、Lies
What is exactly a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you, you say: I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself. In fact, you are not short of money, but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?
A scientific study of lying shows women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “white lie” such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researches show that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.
Research has also been done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the same time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying I wish I were somewhere else now.
<1>、According to the first paragraph, we can know that ______. A.telling lies is often necessary in order to avoid being defeated B.telling lies is often bad because people ought not to be dishonest
C.telling lies is sometimes necessary in order not to hurt someone else’s feelings D.telling lies is not bad at all in most cases
<2>、In Paragraph 2, the sentence “Women are better liars than men do.” probably means ______.
A.women are better at telling lies than men B.women liars are better accepted than men
C.women have a better intention when telling lies D.women tell fewer lies than men do <3>、A “white lie” means ______. A.a lie that is completely unbelievable B.a lie that is told with a good will
C.a lie that is always believable
D.a lie that often has an evil purpose
<4>、Politicians and businessmen are supposed to be skilled at telling the kind of lies ______.
A.from which they may gain some advantages B.that seems to be believable
C.that women are most likely to believe
D.with which they can have better relationship with others
<5>、It can be concluded from the passage that ______. A.there is a simple way of finding out if someone is lying
B.from some ways people behave we can know they are lying C.certain emotions are proof of lying
D.in some situations women are most likely to think businessmen are dishonest

1、The Building of the Pyramids
The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids. __1___. There are over eighty of them scattered along the banks of the Nile: some of which are different in shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the “ Step” pyramid and the “ Bent” pyramid. Some of the pyramids still look much the same as they must have done when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or, more often, for stone to use in modern buildings. ___2___. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last for ever.
__3__. However, there are no writings or pictures left to show us how the Egyptians planned or built the pyramids themselves. ___4___. Nevertheless, by examining the actual pyramids and various tools which have been found, archaeologists have formed a fairly clear picture of them.
One thing is certain: there must have been months of careful planning before they could begin to build. ___5___. You may think this would have been easy with miles and miles of empty desert around, but a pyramid could not be built just anywhere. Certain rules had to be followed and certain problems had to be overcome.
A.The dry climate of Egypt has helped to preserve the pyramids and their very shape have made them less likely to fall into ruin.
B.It is practically certain that plans were made for the building of the pyramids because the plans of other large works have fortunately been preserved. C.The first thing they had to do was to choose a suitable place. D.Consequently, we are only able to guess at the methods used. E.Many people were killed while building the pyramids.
F.They have stood for nearly 5,000 years and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet.
